WW1 German S98/05 'Butcher' bayonet - 1st pattern
A 1st pattern S98/05 Butcher bayonet, with scarce leather scabbard. Maker marked 'Alex Coppel'. The first pattern butcher bayonet has the high ears on the crossguard, no flash guards and was made from 1906 until 1915 and came with a metal scabbard. This example is dated 1914. Wooden grips are undamaged and in good smooth condition with a lovely age toning of the grips. Blade is in excellent clean condition, some very minor marks very much typical of a bayonet of this age, though these do not detract whatsoever. A typical 1st pattern 'Butcher' in good condition complimented by a scare leather scabbard.
